“Welcome to the RHF’s 2020 annual report.”

Message from the 28th Governor General of Canada and Chair of the Rideau Hall Foundation, the Right Honourable David Johnston

“Our mission is to create a better Canada where everyone can reach their fullest potential.”

Message from Teresa Marques, President and CEO of the Rideau Hall Foundation

Leading
Together

The RHF is committed to raising public awareness about and commitment to Canada’s multi-faceted democracy.

Perceptions of
Public Institutions

The RHF undertook research with Abacus Data both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, to determine how Canadians feel about their public institutions, and whether there is an opportunity to increase Canadians’ engagement with them in order to maintain a healthy democracy. The findings show interesting shifts in how Canadians feel about their public institutions.

Innovating
Together

Innovation is one of the driving forces behind Canada’s high quality of life. The RHF works to foster a culture of innovation by celebrating Canadian accomplishments and inspiring the next generation of innovators.

Governor General’s
Innovation Awards

Celebrating excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society and inspiring all Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators. The RHF is proud to operate the GGIA, which honoured six recipients in 2020.

Arctic Inspiration prize

Encouraging, enabling and celebrating the inspiring achievements of the people of the North.  The RHF serves as the behind-the-scenes managing partner for the Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP), supporting a Northern Trust and an elaborate network of Northern partner groups (Patrons, Prize Partners, Ambassadors, Laureates, Nominators). We celebrated the AIP and its Laureates on February 19th in partnership with APTN, where for the first time ever, the AIP awarded more than $3 million.

Culture of Innovation Report

In 2020, the RHF launched the second edition of Canada’s Culture of Innovation Index, which measures how we approach and value innovation in all spheres of our society. The results showed that Canadians believe innovation can lead to healthier people, economic growth and a cleaner environment, but nearly all Canadian institutions are seen as lagging when it comes to innovation, including local communities, charities and non-profits, Canadian government, and healthcare and education systems. The report was developed in partnership with Edelman Canada.

Learning
Together

The RHF is committed to achieving equality of opportunity and excellence in learning for all Canadians.

Indigenous student success

Increasing access to education and helping young people achieve their full potential are key priorities for the RHF. It is an honour to partner with Indspire on the Teach for Tomorrow Program and serve as an ally in supporting Indigenous student success by increasing the number of Indigenous teachers in classrooms across the country.

Queen Elizabeth Scholars

The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships is a made-in-Canada platform for global student mobility and academic diplomacy that helps to shape the leaders of tomorrow. We’d like to thank the Waugh Family Foundation and the International Development Research Centre for their commitment in 2020 to the QES program and its values.

While scholars are not currently traveling due to the global pandemic, the QES program is committed to keeping QES alumni connected and engaged. This collaborative initiative is made possible through the leadership of the Rideau Hall Foundation, in collaboration with Universities Canada and Canadian universities.

In 2020, the Barrett Family Foundation made a generous donation of $10 million to the RHF, to establish the Barrett Canada Fund. Through this partnership, the RHF will strengthen civic and charitable engagement; deepen Canada’s culture of innovation; help level the playing field for young people across Canada to pursue their goals; and support the next generation of Indigenous teachers.

A Note on Expenses for 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the work of the charitable sector in 2020; however, overall donations and contributions received by the Rideau Hall Foundation remained consistent. Travel restrictions temporarily reduced the investments we could make in existing programs based on global scholar mobility, thereby reducing some revenues that could be recognized in the year. Overall, our level of activity remained high through the year and our administrative costs were relatively stable. The RHF is committed to delivering impactful programs with the highest possible efficiency. Our average administrative and fundraising cost ratio for the last three years (including 2020) is 13%. Our audited financial statements can be found here.

Since 2014, Scotiabank has invested over $1.6M in the work of the Rideau Hall Foundation, and is proud to be one of its earliest and largest supporters. Most recently, the Bank committed to supporting their Catapult Canada Access Innovation Fund, benefiting community-based organizations in an effort to improve educational access and outcomes for youth. This support aligns to ScotiaRISE – the Bank’s 10-year, $500 million initiative to promote economic resilience among disadvantaged groups. Scotiabank looks forward to continuing our relationship with the Rideau Hall Foundation, as we work to help remove barriers to advancement and increase access to opportunities so that more Canadians can succeed and thrive.
