The RHF undertook research with Abacus Data both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, to determine how Canadians feel about their public institutions, and whether there is an opportunity to increase Canadians’ engagement with them in order to maintain a healthy democracy. The findings show interesting shifts in how Canadians feel about their public institutions.
Public service journalism is a key component of a healthy democracy, and the Michener Awards recognize some of the best journalism in Canada. The RHF and the Michener Awards Foundation joined forces in 2020 to support and celebrate excellence in Canadian journalism. In December we celebrated the 2019 Michener Award winner, The Globe & Mail for their investigation False Promises, led by reporter Kathy Tomlinson.
The goal of Forum for Young Canadians is to deepen young people’s understanding of Canada’s national decision-making process. Canada’s pre-eminent experience for youth to learn about parliamentary democracy and decision-making, Forum came under the RHF umbrella in December 2020. Through the RHF, Forum will receive the support and permanent infrastructure it needs to ensure more youth have the opportunity to engage in our democracy and the institutions that form its foundation.
“For a small-town kid, Forum was nothing short of life-changing. I remember how exhilarating it was to meet with Members of Parliament, debate issues and make friends with engaged and dynamic young Canadians from across the country and imagine a future where I could play a meaningful role. I am still in touch with friends I met in that transformative week. We all still treasure the memories of our time at Forum, which inspired us to persistently work hard to make Canada a better country.”
– Stephen Brosha, 2001
2020 was a challenging year for people around the world. The RHF believes the power of generosity and giving can transform this shared experience into a more positive one for all of us. GivingTuesdayNow was a community-driven response to the COVID-19 pandemic lead by CanadaHelps. The RHF was honoured to help drive this campaign, and to witness Canadians coming together to give back in a time of crisis.
Everyone has something to give, and every act of generosity counts.
While Canadians are unquestionably generous, charitable giving is on the decline, and only 5% of Canadians leave a gift to charity in their will. The Will Power campaign encourages Canadians to consider a gift in their will to unleash a new wave of generosity, with the potential of generating $40 billion over the next 10 years for charities to do more social good. The RHF was a seed funder for this initiative, spearheaded by the Canadian Association of Gift Planners.
Only 5%of canadians leave a gift to charity in their will.
Celebrating excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society and inspiring all Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators. The RHF is proud to operate the GGIA, which honoured six recipients in 2020.

Increasing access to education and helping young people achieve their full potential are key priorities for the RHF. It is an honour to partner with Indspire on the Teach for Tomorrow Program and serve as an ally in supporting Indigenous student success by increasing the number of Indigenous teachers in classrooms across the country.
“Equity in education, inspiring innovative thinking in young people and helping to strengthen civic mindedness across the country are lofty goals when working alone. Joining forces with the RHF to create the Barrett Canada Fund means drawing on even more expertise and resources to amplify our impact for young people from coast to coast to coast.”
– Bob Barrett
“The Barrett Foundation and the Rideau Hall Foundation share a number of core values – a belief in the transformative power of innovation and the importance of equality of opportunity. Our work together will build up and strengthen our country for generations to come.”
– The Right Honourable David Johnston

Since 2014, Scotiabank has invested over $1.6M in the work of the Rideau Hall Foundation, and is proud to be one of its earliest and largest supporters. Most recently, the Bank committed to supporting their Catapult Canada Access Innovation Fund, benefiting community-based organizations in an effort to improve educational access and outcomes for youth. This support aligns to ScotiaRISE – the Bank’s 10-year, $500 million initiative to promote economic resilience among disadvantaged groups. Scotiabank looks forward to continuing our relationship with the Rideau Hall Foundation, as we work to help remove barriers to advancement and increase access to opportunities so that more Canadians can succeed and thrive.

“The Taylor Family Foundation and the RHF share a passion in encouraging pride in our country and celebrating Canadians who have made important leadership contributions. We are proud to be one of the RHF’s earliest supporters, and have been thrilled to see the Foundation grow its impact and find new barn-raising approaches for Canadians to work together in building a smarter and more caring Canada.”
